You bought the standing desk, raised it twice, and now it lives at sitting height with a plant on it. Sound familiar? There’s a reason, and it has very little to do with willpower.
Here’s my take: the most important feature on a standing desk for artists is how easy it is to change height. If moving it takes ten seconds of cranking and a cleared surface, you’ll leave it in one spot forever and you’ve paid extra for a regular desk. Buy for the switch. A desk you adjust three times a day beats a fancier one you never touch.
If you only do one thing: set the standing height so your forearms rest parallel to the floor with relaxed shoulders, then save it as a preset. One button press is the difference between a desk you use and a desk you dust.
Why artists like working standing up
Standing changes how you draw and paint. Plenty of artists find it helps in a few specific ways:
- Bigger, looser marks. Your whole arm moves from the shoulder, which is lovely for gestural sketches and broad washes.
- Easy step-backs. You can step away and see the piece from a distance without getting up from a chair.
- More movement through the day. Switching positions is a common-sense way to stay fresh during long sessions.
- Smooth transitions. Sketch standing, lower the desk, and finish the digital cleanup seated.
A common rule of thumb is to change positions every 30 to 60 minutes. Listen to your own body and aim for variety. You don’t need a stopwatch.
How high should your standing desk go?
Before you fall for a pretty bamboo top, check the height range on the listing. This is where many desks quietly fail taller or shorter artists.
- Your standing height should match your elbow height while standing, forearms parallel to the floor.
- If you’re tall, look for a maximum height of 48 to 50 inches.
- If you’re petite, check the minimum height too. Many desks bottom out around 28 inches, which can be too tall for seated drawing.
- Monitor top at or slightly below eye level in both positions. A monitor arm makes this easy.

Wobble is the one buyers mention most. Every standing desk gets a little less steady at full height, and an artist drawing fine lines notices sooner than someone typing an email. Wider frames, crossbars, and dual motors all help.

If you’ll switch more than once a day, go electric. A crank desk is a fine choice if you mostly stay at one height and adjust for a different project now and then.

3. Manual crank desk
Budget friendly and cord free. Best if you mostly work at one height and switch occasionally.
4. Standing drafting desk
A tilting top (often up to about 45 degrees) brings the paper toward your eyes. Many raise high enough to work standing or perched on a drafting chair. For graphite, ink, and watercolor sketching, this is my favorite type.

5. Converter (desk riser)
Already love your desk? A converter sits on top and lifts your keyboard, monitor, or sketchbook up to standing height. It’s the lowest-commitment way to try standing.

Then place your lamp on the side opposite your drawing hand, and park a rolling cart close enough that you never have to bend down to grab a brush.
Accessories that make standing comfortable
- Anti-fatigue mat. The single best add-on. A 3/4 inch cushioned mat makes a hard floor feel very different after an hour.
- Monitor arm. Keeps the screen at eye level when you switch heights.

- Under-desk shelf or cable tray. Cords that move with the desk won’t snag or yank.
- Rolling cart. Your supplies travel with you.

Cable slack is the sneaky problem. Raise the desk to its full height once before you plug everything in, and leave enough cord for the top position. Otherwise your lamp unplugs itself mid-sketch.
Investment pieces worth it
You can absolutely start with a converter and a mat. These are for artists who already know they’ll use a sit-stand setup daily.
